There are more than 20,000 International standards, all these standards are published by the International Organization for Standardization. This organization is an international body established by governments around the world. Its purpose is to publish standards as a way to deliver knowledge and best practice, and they are recognized in every country. ISO certification management standards are part of these 20,000 standards which are created with the intention to help companies and to improve their operations in particular areas.

There are many ISO standards in those most popular standards are ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001, ISO 20000, HACCP and some other standards like CMMI, and CE Mark certification.
For an instance, ISO 9001 certification is for quality management, ISO 27001 certification is for Information security management system likewise. Because of that most of the talk about ISO standards is related to companies and their registration, certification, and accreditation. There are multiple ways to get registered/ certified/ accredited according to the standards either its an organization or an individual.

Certification vs. registration

If you want to say that a particular company has implemented a standard like quality management system according to ISO 9001 it should undergo with certain procedure and it must complete the certification audit successfully. Later the certification body has issued the certificate, you would normally call this as registration or certification.

The procedure is same but the terms are different according to the region, IN North America the term “registration” is used mostly, rest of the world is calling with the term “certification”. By the way, the International Organization for Standardization recommends usage of the term “certification”

Certification body vs. registrar

Certification bodies will conduct certification audits and issues the certificate. In North America they usually call the term registrars and rest of the world called as certification bodies i.e, only terminology difference.

Accreditation vs. certification

Accreditation is a license for certification bodies to conduct certification audits and issue the certificate. So, you have to check the certification bodies whether they are accredited or not. If you are going through some of the ISO consulting services also need to check whether the certification body is accredited or not.

Generally accreditation bodies is only one for each country but so many certification bodies will issue certificate under one accreditation body.
